As a privately-owned, family business we feel that we must address the most recent events occurring across our Nation. As an interracial family, we have felt the pain of these recent events in a very personal way. Cooperative Counseling Services is deeply committed to social justice for the children and families we serve. As such, we stand in solidarity with all those who oppose injustice as we mourn the recent loss of life of George Floyd and other victims of an unjust system. When we see injustice, we must not be silent. We echo the words of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King who said, “One who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as one who helps perpetrate it. One who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”
The children and families we serve are in pain and are suffering. As confirmed by the CDC, there is a disproportionate burden of illness and death among racial and ethnic minority groups due to COVID-19. In addition, the recent events of Ahmaud Arbery, Christian Cooper, and George Floyd emphasize an unjust system that continues to undervalue citizens of color. As a behavioral health company, we recognize the emotional toll this takes on those with whom we work. We also understand the toll it takes on our team and others who provide behavioral health services and support for children and families. We validate the intensity and magnitude of the various feelings experienced during this difficult time. Together, we will continue our work to heal our deep wounds and build upon hope for a more just, inclusive Nation.
The youth of our country are speaking out during this time and coming together in hopeful solidarity. We have witnessed unity and support from all people across our cities, states, country and the world. We can build upon this to combat systemic racism and create an environment of equity and social justice. Together, we stand side-by-side!
